What to expect at the end of your ED visit?

What to expect at the end of your ED visit?

Once you have been attended to by your healthcare team, you will either be admitted in the hospital or discharged to go home, based on your medical situation.

Discharged home

You will be given documents with follow-up instructions that need to be practised at home. You will also be given the results of the tests performed that should be shared with you regular doctor for further medical attention. A nurse will hand over these documents to you after removing the IVs, if any. However, it is important to undrstand that this process may take some time.

Admitted in the hospital

If your situation is critical, you will be moved to a hospital room to monitor your progress. Since rooms might be available only at varying times, it is important to be patient and calm. The hospital will ensure you get the best possible treatment in the ED and will continue to do so even after you get a designated room.

What can you do to help?

  • Make note of the names of your primary-care doctors and the doses of medications you take at home.
  • Eat or drink only when the doctor says it is all right to do so. This request is for your own safety. It will also help keep your visit as short as possible.
  • Please cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Also, please use the waterless hand soap available throughout the department.
  • Keep a photo ID and your insurance card handy. A member of the patient’s financial
  • assistance team will need these to update your information and locate your records.
  • Change into a hospital gown. Your doctor cannot do a full examination until you are in a gown.
  • Limit your cell phone use and please be aware of your voice level. Your neighbours will appreciate this courtesy.
  • Take notes. If you can, write down the information shared with you or any questions you may have.
  • Ask us! We are happy to give you as much information as possible, but sometimes we get very busy. If you would like an update on your wait or if you have any questions, please ask any member of your healthcare team.
