Endobariatric Procedures

Endobariatric Procedures

Endobariatrics is a new field of gastroenterology that addresses the concern of obesity. Endobariatric procedures include intragastric balloon placement and endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty. These procedures are less invasive and also less permanent than bariatric surgery.

Intragastric Balloon Placement

Intragastric balloon placement involves the placing a saline-filled silicone balloon in the stomach. This helps one lose weight by limiting food intake.

How is it performed?

  • Before the procedure, the patient will be sedated.
  • The doctor will insert a catheter loaded with the intragastric balloon down the throat into the stomach.
  • The doctor advances an endoscope also down the throat into the stomach. The camera allows the doctor to see the balloon as they fill it with saline.
  • The procedure takes about a half-hour.

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is a minimally invasive weight loss procedure where the doctor places sutures in the stomach to make it smaller.

How is it performed?

  • The patient is administered general anaesthesia before the procedure.
  • The doctor inserts an endoscope into the mouth and down the throat to the stomach. An endoscopic suturing device is attached to it.
  • The camera allows the doctor to see inside the stomach while suturing it to make it smaller.
  • This changes the structure of the stomach and restricts the amount of food consumed.
  • This procedure takes about 60 to 90 minutes.
