Expert Insights On The Hidden Dangers Of Osteoporosis And How To Protect Your Bone Health

23 Oct, 2024

Osteoporosis is one of the most silent diseases, affecting millions of people worldwide. It often goes unnoticed until it has already caused significant damage to the bones, which is why it is crucial to be aware of its hidden dangers. Osteoporosis is a condition that makes your bones weak, brittle, and prone to fractures, even from minor actions like coughing or bending. The risk of osteoporosis increases with age, particularly for women after menopause, but it can also affect men.

One of the major signs of osteoporosis is the gradual weakening of the bones, making them more susceptible to fractures, especially in the spine, hip, and wrist. These fractures can lead to long-term complications, such as decreased mobility, loss of independence, and chronic pain. Early detection through regular bone density tests is essential for managing the condition.

Dr. Saravanan Manoharan, Senior Consultant Orthopaedics at MGM Healthcare,  discussed about the hidden dangers of osteoporosis with Jagran English. According to Dr. Manoharan, osteoporosis is often called the “silent disease” because bone loss occurs without symptoms, and by the time fractures occur, the bones are already severely weakened. This condition not only affects skeletal health but also leads to reduced mobility, chronic pain, and a psychological toll.

Dr. Manoharan emphasized that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 50 will experience osteoporotic fractures in their lifetime. These statistics underscore the scale of the issue, which many people are unaware of. Simple lifestyle changes, proper nutrition, and exercise can help prevent or reduce the risks of osteoporosis. Early screening and detection can make a significant difference in managing the condition.
