Procedures we do

A skin lesion biopsy is a simple outpatient procedure in which a small sample of the patient’s skin is removed and tested in a laboratory. There are several ways the dermatologist can collect a skin sample. A skin biopsy is performed to help determine the cause of a growth, sore or rash.

This could include:
  • changing moles
  • chronic bacterial or fungal skin infection
  • noncancerous growths
  • precancerous cells
  • skin cancer
  • rashes or blistering skin conditions
How Is It Performed?

A skin lesion biopsy requires little preparation. Depending on the reason for the biopsy – the location, size and type of lesion or sore – the method of biopsy will be decided.
Before any type of biopsy, the patient is given local anaesthesia to numb the biopsy site.

  • Shave biopsy: In this method of biopsy, the dermatologist removes only the outermost layers of the skin with a special razor blade or scalpel.
  • Punch biopsy: This method uses a small, tube-like instrument with a sharp end. Once the right sample is taken, the dermatologist removes the skin sample with tweezers and close the incision with a single stitch.
  • Excisional biopsy: This method is used to remove the entire lesion. The dermatologist makes an incision and removes the entire lesion.
  • Incisional biopsy: This method is used to remove a small part of a larger lesion.

After the biopsy, the site is covered with gauze and bandaged. The patient will be able to go home once the sample has been taken.

Microdermabrasion is a minimally-invasive procedure used to renew overall skin tone and texture. It can improve the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, acne scarring and other skin-related concerns and conditions.

The procedure uses a special applicator with an abrasive surface to gently sand away the thick outer layer of the skin to rejuvenate it.

How is it performed?

Microdermabrasion is an outpatient procedure that usually takes about one hour and does not require the use of a numbing agent.

  • The patient is seated in a reclining chair and the dermatologist uses a handheld device to gently sand away the outer layer of skin in the targeted areas.
  • Diamond-tip handpiece: A diamond-tip handpiece is designed to gently exfoliate dead cells in the skin. At the same time, it will suction it off immediately.
  • Crystal microdermabrasion: This method uses a crystal-emitting handpiece to gently spray fine crystals – either aluminium oxide or sodium bicarbonate – to rub away the outer layers of the skin.
  • At the end of the treatment, a moisturiser is applied to the skin.

Microneedling is a minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure that is used to treat skin concerns via collagen production. This treatment may help reduce the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks. It is also used in certain anti-aging procedures, such as eyelid surgery and sun spots.

Microneedling works by encouraging the skin to make more collagen, a protein in the body. It’s normal for the skin to lose collagen during ageing. The pricking encourages the skin to make new tissue and this results in more collagen production to help make the skin firmer.

How is it performed?
  • Before getting started, your doctor will use a topical anaesthetic to reduce the chances of pain.
  • This is done about an hour before your treatment. During the procedure, the dermatologist makes small pricks under the skin with a pen-like tool.
  • The tool is moved evenly across the skin so that the new skin that is rejuvenated will be even too.
  • The dermatologist may apply a coating of serum on the treated area after the procedure.
  • The procedure lasts for a couple of hours and the patient can return home after the procedure.
