MGM Healthcare,Dr. Arul Prakash first in TamilNadu to launch GERD-X Applicator for treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorders :
“Great things will happen when we join hands and work together, a monumentary movement in the field of Gastroenterology and it will change the lives of so many people.”
Acid reflux is a common medical problem, around 30% of the Indian population are having gastroesophageal reflux disease.
A valve like muscle at the junction of stomach and food pipe allows food to enter the stomach and prevents backlash of stomach contents.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when the valve loosens up and allows acid contents to move up into the esophagus. Acid Reflux may cause damage to the esophagus, pharynx, or respiratory tract.
Symptoms Of GERD :
Heart-burn
Regurgitation
Difficulty in swallowing
Sore-throat
Chest Pain
Coughing
Voice change
Worsening wheeze
Increased Salivation
Diagnostic procedures for GERD:
Endoscopy – A flexible tube with camera at tip to observe the lax valve, inflammation, ulcer in the food pipe.
24 hour pH impedance – a thin flexible tube is placed in the food pipe just above the valve and the reflux episodes are monitored during a 24 hour stay.
Esophageal manometry – technique of measuring the tightness of food pipe valve and function of food pipe.
Medications :
Antacids
Acid reducing medications
Indications for Endoscopic/Surgical interventions :
Long term required medications.
Persistent symptoms like heart-burn and extensive acid reflux who are not responding to tablets.
Novel endoscopic techniques :
Endoscopic full thickness plication : GERD-X
Stretta : Radiofrequency ablation
Anti reflux mucosectomy : ARMS
Anti reflux mucosal ablation : ARMA
Revolution in the treatment of GERD :- Introduction of GERD-X In the treatment of Gastro-esophageal Reflux Disorders:
GERD-X Procedure “Endoscopic full thickness Plication” of food-pipe/stomach junction
It is a non-invasive procedure of tightening the food pipe junction under general anaesthesia.
The procedure is done with the help of an endoscopic camera ,clamp system and non-absorbable suture system.
A young person who was suffering from GERD, not responding to antacids and acid reducing medication underwent endoscopic full thickness plication – Gerd-X for the first time.
It was led by interventional gastroenterologist Dr. Arulprakash and Dr. Tarun J.George, says a selective group of people who was suffering from GERD and not responding to long-term medications ,will be benefited from “Endoscopic full thickness plication”
This procedure will improve the quality of life and reduce the medications usage.
Day Care procedure.
Short hospitalisation
Excellent postprocedure results.
