MGM Cancer Institute has successfully performed a bone marrow transplant on a critical patient with relapsed multiple myeloma.
The 55-year-old patient (name withheld) was diagnosed with multiple myeloma — it is a type of blood cancer that affects plasma cells (specialised blood cells that produce antibodies to fight infection).
Doctors said in patients with this condition the abnormal plasma cells build up in the bone marrow and impair the production of normal blood cells and can affect kidneys, bones and other organs of the body impeding normal function, said Hemato-Oncology (BMT) associate consultant Dr M Gopinathan. Chemotherapy was used as the first form of treatment given, and BMT was subsequently done to achieve good control of the disease
