Mr Ashok Rao, 61-year-old, from Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, underwent a successful combined liver transplant and a beating heart bypass surgery.

Mr Rao had developed multiple blood vessel blocks in his heart. When he consulted cardiologists at MGM Healthcare, he was advised of bypass surgery. During his evaluation for the surgery, he was diagnosed with pre-existing end-stage liver disease. It was a major task for the team as the survival rate is minimal for major open-heart surgery for a person with severe liver failure.

Acknowledging that, our expert multidisciplinary team, including Dr Thiagarajan Srinivasan, Director and Senior Consultant, Institute of Liver Diseases, Transplant and HPB Surgery, Dr Kailash A. Jain, Senior Consultant and Clinical Lead, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and various anaesthetists and Intensivists, performed surgery that lasted nearly 20 hours.

During surgery and after, there were multiple challenges such as massive blood loss and a very high risk of heart attack and arrhythmias. But with meticulous follow-ups, we are happy to announce that Mr Ashok Rao is now leading a near-normal life after 6 months of surgery.
