Complex Bilateral lung transplant on a one year old

1 Sep, 2021

MGM Healthcare had successfully performed a complex bilateral lung transplant on a one-year-old boy from Chennai who is now one of the world’s youngest and India’s youngest recipient to undergo a bilateral lung transplant.

A 30-member team under the leadership of Dr KR Balakrishnan, Chairman – Cardiac Sciences and Director – Institute of the Heart and Lung Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support, and Co-Director, Dr Suresh Rao KG, successfully performed the procedure on the little patient on August 24th, 2021.

The baby was diagnosed with bronchopulmonary dysplasia and was on a ventilator from birth as his oxygen saturation level was constantly low. It was extremely challenging to transplant the lungs as there was a size mismatch between the donor and the recipient.

“It is a Herculean task anywhere in the world to perform a dual-lung transplant on such a small child without any complications,” said Dr KR Balakrishnan. The child was fortunate to get a pair of lungs from a brain dead paediatric patient. The child is now stable and being continuously monitored in the ICU.

At MGM Healthcare, we endeavour to provide the best patient care. It is cases such as this that are testimony to our hardworking and dedicated doctors, nurses and all the medical staff. We aspire to keep doing more, better. We would also like acknowledge the noble gesture made by the donor’s family in donating the child’s organs. Your decision has helped breathe life into another child.
