Varam At MGM Healthcare Triumphs In Treating Rare Pregnancy Condition

28 Dec, 2023

In a remarkable medical achievement, Varam, a women’s super-speciality center at MGM Healthcare, announces the successful treatment of a high-risk pregnant patient from Bangladesh grappling with the extremely rare Twin Reversed Arterial Perfusion (TRAP) sequence. The patient, Zeenat (name changed), overcame the heartbreaking loss of three previous infants due to this condition, delivering a live and healthy baby under the expert care of Dr Vanitha Shri R. and the medical team at Varam.

Zeenat’s journey began in September 2023 when she sought assistance at Varam, MGM Healthcare, during her 20th week of pregnancy. Having faced recurrent miscarriages and infant losses, she travelled from Bangladesh for guidance and treatment. Dr Vanitha Shri R., Senior Consultant in Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Fertility Specialist at Varam, identified the rare condition through a series of tests, confirming the presence of Twin Reversed Arterial Perfusion (TRAP) in one of the twins.

Twin Reversed Arterial Perfusion (TRAP) Sequence is an exceedingly rare condition, occurring in about 1 in 35,000 pregnancies, where one twin has an abnormal mass of tissue while the other is anatomically normal. Dr S. Sudarshan, Fetal Medicine Specialist at Mediscan Systems Private Limited, and  Vanitha Shri R. collaborated to devise a treatment plan, which included a groundbreaking Radio-Frequency Ablation (RFA) procedure to stop blood flow to the abnormal twin.

Dr S. Sudarshan explained the intricacies of the RFA technique, highlighting its success in protecting the normal twin from potential heart failure or death. Additionally, the pregnancy was complicated by severe anaemia in the normal twin due to Rhesus isoimmunisation, necessitating three intrauterine blood transfusions.

Despite numerous complications, including autoimmune hemolytic anaemia, anti-phospholipid antibody positivity, and being Rh-negative, Zeenat was closely monitored through an MCA Doppler scan. The baby was delivered via cesarean at 32 weeks, and both the mother and the newborn underwent further treatments for complications.

Dr Urjitha Rajagopalan, Director of MGM Healthcare, praised the dedicated medical team’s resilience and innovation in overcoming the challenges posed by a rare medical condition. The successful outcome underscores Varam’s commitment to providing excellence in women’s healthcare, demonstrating compassion, and embracing cutting-edge technologies.
