Mucormycosis Surgery by Prof Dr. Sanjeev Mohanty

Mon, 7 ENT, Head & Neck Surgery

Mrs. Vaijayanthi, a 68-year-old from Chennai, arrived at MGM Healthcare’s Emergency Room in the middle of the night. She was COVID positive and was unable to open her right eye. She had contracted a mucormycosis infection that had spread to her paranasal sinuses and orbit. She needed immediate surgery to remove all traces of the fungus to ensure that no permanent damage sets in.

After a thorough examination, Prof Dr. Sanjeev Mohanty, Senior Consultant and Head, Institute of ENT, Head and Neck Surgery, MGM Healthcare, planned the approach. An emergency endoscopic surgery was required. After four gruelling hours, the surgery was completed successfully. Immediately after the surgery, the patient reported alleviation of her pain and other symptoms.

At MGM Healthcare, we endeavour to find solutions to medical problems that are plaguing the planet. Mucormycosis is now more often seen in patients with COVID-19. Early identification, immediate surgical intervention, and medication are required to treat such patients. Armed with medical expertise, state-of-the-art technology, and infrastructure, we strive to save more lives each and every day.
